questionairre

After we made our film and published it to YouTube, we asked 5 of our classmates the following 5 questions:

Question 1: what did you like about the camera angles used?
Question 2: what did you like about the mise-en-scene?
Question 3: what did you like about the sounds?
Question 4: what did you like about the editing?
Question 5: how would you improve our film?

The feedback we received, overall, was very positive and promising. we had a mixture of constructive criticism and very pleasing feedback.

On the whole, for question 1, our feedback was that our camera angles used were very effective and that we used the right shots in the right places. One of our participants said that we used the shot reverse shot the best they had seen in our class. This was very pleasing to hear as we have put loads of effort into our filming and making sure we have the right camera angles for each shot because we knew that we could only film our opening in one day due to the snow.

Our feedback for question 2 was that our costumes were very good at representing our target audience: teenagers. Also, with the use of the props available to us, we used them very efficiently according to Will (one of our participants). we, as a group, feel the same way as we had limited time to get the filming correct but, we managed to do this well.

evaluation task 1

At the start of our clip, it shows all the characters in our film and the type of costumes that are used which relate to the teenage audience. These are the stereotypical clothes like hoodies, trainers and jeans. This conforms to the horror genre and the expected costume and character roles.

This medium shot is effective because it shows the main characters in the narrative and shows the setting of the opening. The setting is in a forest and it is quite dark and snowy. this would create an atmosphere for the audience because they would know that the characters are vulnerable in the woods. Furthermore this is a recognizable setting that the audience would relate to and is a conventional setting featured i n horror films.

This image is a long shot which shows the the remote setting and would create further tension fort the audience as they would see that the forest is empty and this could hint that something bad is going to happen.

This screenshot shows one of the characters searching through a bag, this frantic search creates tension and you can feel the characters frustration. This is important as it leads to why the main bit in the clip happens.

This shot is an over the shoulder shot. This is effective as it means the audience can feel as if they are in he characters hoes and see whats happening from their point of view. This is a key part as it is when one of the characters actually gets shot.

This is a close up shot of tom, the character that gets shot. It shows his emotion and pain he is feeling which means the audience can relate to the character and and become emotionally connected.

This is low angle medium shot of the villain of the film. the low angle makes the character looks big and scary. It also makes it look like the character is intimidating and imposing which makes the film more effective.

This screenshot is one of our production credits. we focused on this to make our film look more professional as it is a main part of the opening. we put an additive dissolve on it as it makes it more effective and appealing to the audience.

For our title of our film we used big white bold writing on a black background. This is very common in the horror genre in this day and age as it is very effective and and gives emphasis on the intriguing name of the film. By having the title at the end of our opening it makes the name more effective as it leaves the audience with something to remember.

evaluation task 2

The character Robbie in our film is similar the the character of Nick Jones in House of Wax. This is because they are a similar height and build and have a similar overall look.

Also you can compare their costumes as they are both wearing stereo typical teenage clothing. For example Robbie is wearing a hoodie in our film and so does nick in House of Wax. Another thing that is similar between the two characters is their age and that they would both attract a mixed audience who would identify the character. Females in the audience could also attract on maybe fancy the male character of both films whilst the
male audience could aspire to be like them.

evaluation task 7

From our preliminary task we learnt many things which enabled as to improve and make a good opening for our film. One thing being match on action, we experimented with this and got use to how it works, this meant we could use it effectively in our final project.

One of the things that made our preliminary task less dynamic was the framing of some of our shots.  Some shots were a little rushed and we didn't think them through very well, like the shot where Robbie is walking from one room to another, it goes on for a bit too long and is quite dull.  This is something we thought about a little more when it came to filming our final production and there are some good shots which show character and establish location at the same time, like the shot where all the characters are in a group which outlines all characters involved and at the same time lets the audience have a view of the location. Another more dynamic show was the low angle medium shot of Robbie before he goes to strangle his victim, the low shot allows him to look intimidating and give a different perspective for the audience.

What shots did you use int he final production that showed progression?

Another thing we learnt from our preliminary task was how to use shot reverse shot, this is commonly used when two characters are having a conversation. Our preliminary task allowed us to get used to this and meant we could put it to good use in our opening.

Editing:

How did you use titles and credits in your main production and what did you cut in thefinal production.  Looking back on your preliminary task, what could you have done to have improved it in the editing process?

Our preliminary task did teach us some valuable lessons about working together in order to create a finished production and we learnt some valuable technical skills.  Some of the strengths of the piece were the cuts we made between shots in order to establish pace and this is something you can see in some places in our final production.  One place were our cutting of shots is effective is the place where there is a shot of Robbie holding the gun and then there is a quick cut to Tom when he notices and looks scared.

How have you considered mise-en-scene in your final production more than you did in the preliminary task?

evaluation task 8

For G321 next year there is going to be a new challenge and there are some things i will need to improve or change to get better and make a good trailer.
One thing that i will do next year will be getting a wider range of understanding on Adobe elements software. By spending a greater deal of time on this and discovering more techniques i can make a more effective and an overall better end product.

Also another thing that could help my end production next year will be trying to improve the  quality of filming, by gaining more experience with the camera the overall shots and scenes will then be better quality.
One target i will set myself is to experiment more with mise en scene, i will try and to use different areas more for example try to use different lighting to fit the scene and maybe also try and use different costumes to make it more exciting and realistic for the audience. Also when it comes to editing i will try and make the cuts cleaner and transitions smoother from shot to shot.

The general dialogue between characters could be more adventurous and interesting for the viewers which is a target i will set and also a wider range of soundtracks to fit the different moods in the clip.

Bloody Fishing- Media G321 2015 (opening 2 minutes)

evaluation task 6

To film our opening footage we used an iPhone. It was easy to use but when uploading the footage the format of the shots were quite small. The Iphone is multi platform technology so we had the option to quickly and efficiently send the clips to our computer where we can then start editing our opening two minutes. the software we used to edit was adobe premier elements 10. using the computer was the main part of making this project. with in adobe elements 10, to make our 2 minutes more professional we focused on production credits and used additive flash to make them very effective. we also edited our initial clips that we needed to mkare them shorter and put them in the right order. adobe also allowed us to insert sound effects, for example, the gun noise we added ourselves. also, on the computer we used blogger and the internet to research the key ideas and to see what makes a horror film effective. we then did this and used our skills on adobe premiere elements to make our film professional and slick.

evaluation task 4

Image result for teenagersImage result for young couple

Our target audience is the type of people in the above pictures. This is because they are stereotypical teenagers and young adults, whoa are horror film viewers. These types of people may like current music, music which is popular and in the charts. Our target audience would also shop in places like Primark, Top man, river island etc. This is because they are popular and our target audience we want is the current, up to date, trendy 18-26 year olds. These people would wear, jeans, hoodies and trainers. this means when they see our film, they can relate to it as the characters in our film are wearing similar clothing.

TV shows that they would watch would be programmes like, Breaking Bad, Dexter, Prison Break and Sherlock. the reason why they would watch these is because they're a series which are blood pumping and stimulating and have proven to be popular and successful with this group of people. this will then draw the same audience to come and see our film as it includes many of the same things, Eg, crime, horror and thriller codes and conventions.

The characters in our film are aged 16-18 years old. therefore the target audience would relate to our characters. I also included a couple, in the picture above, because they might go and watch horror films on a date as it would scare and entertain them.

Our opening also includes very scary music and a character with a weird Ora. this would appeal to teenagers and young adults because they often like to be entertained by weird and unusual stories. they would then discuss these with their friends. therefore, after watching our film, they then talk about the murder and scary events in our two minutes.

character analysis

Our film is about a group of teenage boys. They are represented in a stereotypical way because this would appeal to fans of the horror or thriller audience. The first time we see them we see that hey are dressed in hoodies and bomber jackets which are stereotypical costumes of teenage boys in horror films. the group are wearing rucksacks which are conventional props. also, the tone of voice of the characters show that they are normal; teenage boys. these characters would e recognizable to out target audience as these character types are often featured in horror films.

analysis of credits

In the opening of the film seven the credits show that it is going to be a horror film, this is because there is white spindly on a black background which is popular in the horror genre at the moment. also the font is on a moving image which makes it dynamic and adds affect, but also the moving image relates to the font as it  shows a hand writing in a book. The credits change from one to another in a flicker y motion, which shows it is creepy. Therefore we may have white font on a black background in our opening as it looks successful.
